Messages from Rev. Christine

Matthew 11

4/6/2020

Good morning

Wendell Berry writes, “I don't think it is enough appreciated how much an outdoor book the Bible is. It is a "hypaethral book," such as Thoreau talked about - a book open to the sky. It is best read and understood outdoors, and the farther outdoors the better. Or that has been my experience of it. Passages that within walls seem improbable or incredible, outdoors seem merely natural. This is because outdoors we are confronted everywhere with wonders; we see that the miraculous is not extraordinary but the common mode of existence. It is our daily bread.”

So, today, I invite you to head outside with 2 verses from Matthew 11.

Matthew offers these familiar and comforting words of Jesus, “Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.  Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

Read the same passage from The Message,  “Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.”

I invite you to walk and pray these words today.  Welcome “the unforced rhythms of grace” to enter your soul.  Steep yourself in his good company.

p.s. this tree stump is just a few steps away from the back door and a reminder to post some forest bathing tips in the days to come!
