History
The Winchester Springs Church building was built on land purchased from Joseph McIntosh in 1870, and was completed and dedicated as a Methodist Episcopal Church in September 1875. In 1925 this Methodist Church became part of the United Church of Canada. In 1964, the congregation of the community’s Presbyterian Church was invited to join in worship after their Church was destroyed by fire. The bell that once tolled from atop their Church now rests quietly in the churchyard of Winchester Springs United Church.
In 1964, stained glass windows, donated “In Memoriam” by members of the congregation and of the Presbyterians, were installed and, in 1980 the new church hall was opened. Two quilts, made up of blocks originally pieced in 1939 by the Mutual Improvement League, and finally sewn and quilted by the UCW ladies in 1984, hang in the hall, thanks to a donation by Mrs. Delia Steele
In 1988 a large painting by Virginia Ferguson, titled “The Good Shepherd”, was presented by T. Victor McIntosh in memory of his parents, Briggs and Dora McIntosh. This painting now proudly hangs behind the altar. Over the Years many gifts have been presented in memory of loved ones passed. We are all proud of our little Church and our very supportive church family.
In 2015, the Winchester Springs congregation was joined by the members of Williamsburg United Church. In the summer of 2016, the new combined congregation selected a new name for their church, and are now called Hope Springs United Church.
